Condition ReportSign uporLog inProvenanceGalerie Daniel Templon, Paris Acquired from the above by the present ownerCatalogue EssayThrough bold paintings, performances, sculptures, videos and writing, renowned German artist Jonathan Meese’s multifaceted oeuvre seeks to dismantle the way we look at our world. Stylistically nodding to the German Neo-Expressionists of the 1980s, including Albert Oehlen and Martin Kippenberger Meese’s visually striking imagery is a medley of cultural, historical and political references. Executed in 2012, GEFUMML Hottie Brullt is a compelling example from his exuberant body of work, presenting the viewer with an amalgamation of patterns and text that both provokes and entices as it pulls them into becoming part of the pandemonium. Rendered in gestural oil and acrylic, the present work positions broad slabs of black and gold alongside angular shapes and nonsensical German slogans that have been squeezed directly from paint tubes onto the monumental canvas. An almost warrior-like mythical creature appears from beneath the thickly applied impasto, further adding to the overall evocative ambiguity. Emerging from Meese’s notion of the ‘Dictatorship of Art’ – a yearning for art to be the revolutionary force that will ‘lead [us] into the future’ (Jonathan Meese quoted in ‘Jonathan Meese über Kunst: Herzblut statt Lifestyle’, Zeit Online, 14 November 2018, online) – the present work lively showcases the artist’s exploration of themes concerning identity, desire and power. Meese has been honoured by representation in numerous public collections including that of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Saatchi Gallery in London, amongst others.Read More
