Autograph Letter Signed (with initials, "Cte.D.G.P."). Beaumont, France, July 12, 1826. 3.75 x 5.75 inches 3pp.+ stampless address leaf. French text To [J.G.V.] De Moleon, Paris. Untranslated, but, written to the “Chief Engineer of the Domains of France”, apparently concerns a book he had just published on physical geography. The son of a slave-trader of Irish descent, Grandpre himself engaged in the African slave trade after service as a Captain in the French Royal Navy, when he traveled through India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Mauritius and Yemen, describing his adventures - and the condemning the “cruelties” of slavery) in two memoirs published in France in 1801.
