A set of Ridgway transferware in the Columbian Star pattern produced for the 1840 presdiential campaign of William Henry Harrison, thirty-two pieces in total, including nine plates, six bowls, two platters, a teapot, three cups with saucers, a small tureen, three rectangular serving dishes, three square lidded serving dishes, and a cup; largest platter lg. 17.5, wd. 13 in. The Harrison campaign of 1840 is generally regarded as the first American presidential race for which supporters of both sides produced ephemera used to promote their candidates. Harrison, known familiarly as "The Farmer From North Bend" (Ohio) is shown here with a horse-drawn plow outside the door of his humble cabin. In reality, by 1840, Harrison was a wealthy landowner, residing at Grouseland, his Indiana Territory mansion. Nonetheless, the Columbian Star pattern was designed to promote Harrison's supposed backwoods origins. Condition: While it is not in the primary image for this lot, the lid to the teapot is present. One serving dish missing lid and with crack and chip to rim. One serving dish with interior chip. One with chip to foot. Crack to one rectangular serving dish. Chip to one saucer, crack to another. One cup with repair.
