Waddington & Son were established as makers of cars and motorcycles, trading from 30, Newport Road in Middlesbrough, then in North Yorkshire, (not an area normally associated with motor manufacture), from 1902 to 1906. They built motor cars of 6hp and 9hp and marketed their 3hp motorcycle as ‘the cheapest on the market’ – it sold in 1903 at a special trade price of just £33 and came with a six month guarantee. This machine is thought to be one of two survivors and is presented in forecar configuration, the passenger seated ‘closest to the accident’. The company exhibited at the Stanley Automobile Show in 1903 and boasted that their 3hp machine ‘leaves everything standing’. The Waddington was powered by a Fafnir engine with atmospheric inlet valve and mechanical exhaust valve and the cylinder bore is stated as 75mm. Final drive is by belt with light pedal assistance facility. The full history of this machine is not known, however in the 1970’s it was owned by S.E.Jose in Cornwall before joining the collection of Dennis Leadbetter at Liss in Hampshire. Invoices are on file recording restoration in the 1980s and showing labour charges of just £2 per hour. The forecar carries a wicker chair to the front with red deep-buttoned upholstery. All fittings are nickel plated, the luggage carrier bears a wicker sandwich basket and the machine is equipped with Nee & Fraisse sidelamps. It has always been considered to be of 1905 manufacture but if further research proves it to be earlier it would, in our opinion, be eligible for the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, its maker having also built motor cars. It is in any case eligible for the prestigious Sunbeam MCC Pioneer Run, subject to official dating approval. The machine comes with an old green logbook recording the registration no. CO 2442, however this machine came to the Ward Bros. Collection from overseas and we feel that number may no longer apply. This logbook should however enable the new owner to apply for an age related number should the forecar remain in the UK.
