This lovely 1923 Sunbeam has all the history and capability one could ever want from an inter-war car. With great British pedigree and easy practicality, it is no surprise their following is ever growing. Sunbeam first produced the 14hp in 1921 and only around 1350 were made. The chassis layout of the 14hp would provide the blueprint for Sunbeam touring cars for the whole next decade. The engine used is a four cylinder, with 1954cc, using Sunbeams new overhead-valve design. With coachwork supplied by Sunbeam themselves, these cars are British icons of refined pre-war design. The Sunbeam marque will always remain associated with British war time resilience and pride, as exhibited by the first lady owner of this 14hp. This example was ordered in 1923 from George Oats & Co., Wellington, for a Miss Gill. The original purchase receipt remains with the car. The car was painted in ‘Dark Smoke Blue’ and the optional extras, as detailed by the receipt, included ‘Gaiters, Clock, and Aluminium No. Plates’. The total cost of the car was £684.13. There is a great deal of family history attached to this car, and Miss Gill kept and looked after 5847C for as long as she could. By all accounts she was a brave and keen motorist. Miss Gill even lent out the Sunbeam to two prisoners of war, members of her family who on their return elected to take “Ducky” on a replenishing tour of England. In the history of the family, it is said ‘They made an extensive tour of Britain’ and they reported back ‘the Sunbeam had not given them a moments trouble’. Only right at the end of Miss Gill’s life could she bear to sell ‘Old Faithful’ and it was passed to a Dr Portnoy of Manchester. Recently the 14hp has returned to its original locality, this is most appropriate considering its lasting plates. The most recent vendor has well cared for the car, and a full engine rebuild was instructed, which took place under the supervision of Roger Carter. Garaged in a collection of pre-war vehicles the 14hp is started and run regularly. The rarity and practicality of these Sunbeams makes them a benchmark for collectors.
