1933 DELAHAYE TYPE 122 FOUR DOOR SALOON COACHWORK BY SICAL Registration No. HSU 816 Chassis No. 42399 Engine No. 122720 Cream over black, grey leather interior Engine: Four cylinder, 73.8x107mm, 1,800cc; Gearbox: three speed manual; suspension: front, transverse, rear semi-elliptic; Brakes: four-wheel drum The firm of Delahaye had its origins in producing machinery for brick making, and was established in 1845. Nearly fifty years later as a result of a move into stationary engines, the first Delahaye motor cars arrived. Their design was certainly familiar and had much in keeping with the Benz cars of that time, being powered by rear mounted horizontal engines and with transmission by belt drive. By the time Emile Delahaye retired in 1901 the factory was not only producing at over 20 units a month, but had also branched into the manufacture of commercial vehicles. Throughout the Edwardian period Delahaye continued to build a range of generally reliable, and often innovative motor cars, indeed the concept of electric transmission which would later become synonymous with the marque was experimented with in 1914. Post war production continued and in 1927 the company allied itself to Chenard-Walcker, Donnet and Unic. Although the latter two fell out of the agreement fairly soon, Delahaye and Chenard cars proceeded to mirror each other, the former adopting the latter's ribbon style radiator almost in exchange for copying the Delahaye six cylinder engine. Delahaye continued to sell four cylinder cars, of between 1½ and 2 litres, of which this type 122 is an example. This car was acquired by Elisabeth Delahaye - of no connection to the original family business - in the mid Seventies in Belgium. Mme Delahaye brought the car to the UK some time later, and it was sent to renowned specialists The Cooke Group in Leicester, where the car was re-upholstered, and some mechanical work undertaken. This combined with other restoration work on the car including re-painting and is reported by the owner to have totalled some .¨25,000. The Delahaye, fitted with upright saloon coachwork by the French firm Sical, is one of very few known to survive and possibly the only car in the UK. The interior is luxuriously appointed in grey leather with matching carpets, and completed with wood trim, it also features an opening windsceen and correct art deco style instrumentation panel. The current owner for many years used it for as her everyday transport, finding it to be particularly reliable and of useful performance, however having remained unused recently, she has decided to part with the car. Basic re-commissioning should return this particularly rare Delahaye to the road.
