THE JAGUAR XK140
It is today difficult to believe that Jaguar conceived the XK120 in 1948 as a limited-production specialty model to showcase the new XK engine. By 1954 - 12,000 examples later - it was clear that it was something else altogether. The XK140 was launched in 1954, giving buyers what they loved about the 120, but with benefits of vastly improved steering, better cooling and brakes, and most importantly, increased legroom thanks to a relocation of the engine. Also new was the option of a 'C-Type' cylinder head, borrowed from the Le Mans winning competition car. XK140s so equipped were called 'SE' in the UK and 'MC' in the 'States. The added power and improved breathing of the C-Type head gave the MC cars 210bhp, providing a quicker and more exciting response.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This classic Jaguar XK140 was completed at the Browns Lane Jaguar workshops about halfway through the 1955 model-year. Chassis no. S810477 was configured as a left-hand drive Roadster (or Open Two Seater as they were officially referred to), and equipped with the desirable 'MC' high-performance package consisting of a better flowing C-Type cylinder head, twin exhaust system, Dunlop chrome wire wheels and Lucas driving lights fitted out front. The performance-oriented Jaguar Roadster would have had about 210 horsepower from new and was most likely delivered new to the booming US Jaguar market. Acquired by the consignor about two decades ago - a Nevada-based classic car enthusiast with a mighty impressive collection of cars - the striking XK140 MC has since been treated to paintwork and many mechanical and cosmetic refurbishments by his knowledgeable in-house specialists. The Jaguar is finished in lovely Carmen Red over a clean black interior, with a matching black Roadster top. Recently refurbished chrome wire wheels remain on the car, shod on period-correct Dunlop Road Speed 5 tires. The MC-style twin exhaust system was recently renewed, and the car is reported to be a good performer. Chrome and brightwork has been diligently detailed, and the many club badges fitted front and rear points to enthusiastic past ownerships. The period Lucas driving lights are mounted on the front, and the correct Smith gauges remain in situ in the dash. This would be a great sportscar for spirited weekend trips, cars and coffee events, or as an entry on one of the many international rallies and tours where this 1955 Jaguar XK140 MC Roadster would be eligible.
