1956 BENTLEY S1 CONTINENTAL TWO DOOR COUPÉ COACHWORK BY PARK WARD Registration No. XYJ 405 Chassis No. BC 36 BG Engine No. BC 35 B Shell Grey with Red Leather Interior Engine: six cylinder, overhead inlet valves, side exhaust, twin SU carburettors, 4887cc; Gearbox: Hydramatic four speed automatic; Brakes: four wheel drum; Suspension: independent by coil springs and wishbones to front: live axle with semi-elliptic springs to rear. Right hand drive. The S1 Continental was introduced in September 1955, to replace the highly successful R-Type, and continued in production until the summer of 1959, a total of 3,072 being built. The S series cars were the last models to be produced to the traditional design using a beautifully engineered, very stiff chassis, fitted with separate body either in the form of a standard steel design made by pressed steel or individually by established coachbuilders such as Park Ward or Mulliner. The Continental version further compounded their enthusiasm as it offered 120mph performance thanks to its tuned engine and carefully chosen back axle ratio. This car was first registered on the 26th September, build sheets record the purchaser to have been Mrs D.H Daly of Moreton-in-the-Marsh Gloucestershire. The car passed to an A. D Allen of Cirencester on the 3rd February 1967. S.P.Broughtons & Co. Ltd of Cheltenham were then to handle the sale of the car on the 1st July 1967. At a later stage the Bentley was sold to the United States. Whilst in America the car received a full restoration with bills amounting to £.25,000 on the mechanical side alone, and the body being restored and repainted. Well-known Rolls-Royce and Bentley agent Euro Motors of Washington D.C. completed this work in February 1990. The vendor purchased the Coupé from Porters of Kensington in 1994, and has since used it on a regular basis, and it successfully completed the Louis Vouiton Rally of China in 1998, coming second in class. In more recent years PJ Fischer Classic Automobiles have maintained the car, having recently completed a light cosmetic restoration.
