Launched in November 1956, Velocette’s Valiant borrowed much from the highly successful LE design, including the engine and transmission layout. Significantly more sporting than the LE, the 192cc, overhead-valve engine developed 12bhp at 6,000rpm and gave the early models a top speed of around 70mph. Contemporary advertising boasted of ‘performance unbounded, economy unexcelled and reliability unswerving’. This machine was acquired by its present owner in 1975, rebuilt during 1976/77 and won the concours at the BMF Show three years running in 1977/78/79. It has continued that concours success record including a first place this year. Since restoration it has covered 7,600 miles with its present owner, the rebuild of engine, gearbox, shaft drive, wheel bearings, head stock, etc providing handsome dividends in terms of reliability. Restoration included stove enamelling, stainless fittings, new Dunlop rims, new battery, steel engine covers and original type silencers. Specification is original in all major respects and the machine is complete with factory fitted extras of left-hand toolbox, crash bars and rear foot rests. The machine is currently registered in the Isle of Man but comes with a copy of its original U.K. registration document which should assist registration if required in the U.K. The bike is presented in traditional black and gold livery and must rank amongst the finest of surviving Valiants.
