Initialement développée et produite à 198 exemplaires par le constructeur d'automobiles de sport français René Bonnet, elle est ensuite fabriquée par Matra Sports à 1 495 exemplaires de 1964 à 1968. A partir de juillet 1966, les Matra Bonnet Djet 5 et Djet 5 S deviennent les Matra-Sports Jet 5 et Jet 6 par abandon du nom Bonnet et du D de Djet pour donner suite à la liquidation de la société Automobiles Bonnet et la fin des accords qui la liaient à Matra Sports. Le logo "Matra Sports" est apposé sur le capot et la face arrière. En 1967 apparaît la Matra Sports Jet 6, ultime évolution du modèle qui reçoit le nouveau moteur 1255 cm³ de la R8 Gordini 1300 (105 ch SAE). Mais contrairement à la Renault, elle se dispense de la nouvelle boîte de vitesses 5 rapports. Malgré cette dernière évolution, les ventes de Matra Djet déclinent et juillet 1968 marque la fin de la production. Innovantes, passionnantes, les René Bonnet et Matra Djet sont des sportives atypiques et devenues très rares dans notre paysage automobile. Véritables collectors, témoins d'une époque fantastique et du génie de ses concepteurs elles n'ont souffert que de leurs qualités pourrait-on dire, à savoir une fabrication artisanale et des solutions techniques avant-gardistes mais non fiabilisées. La Matra Djet est à l'origine de Matra Sports et de son succès en compétition automobile : entre autres Champion du Monde de Formule 1 en 1969 avec ses Matra MS80 pilotée par Jackie Stewart, et triple vainqueur aux 24 Heures du Mans 1972, 1973, et 1974 avec Henri Pescarolo, Graham Hill, Gérard Larrousse sur Matra Simca MS670... Elle a été restaurée il y a 5 ans avec comme inspiration le prototype araignée avec une belle configuration Bleu de France intérieur rouge.
