Fifty years ago, when British manufacturers were arguably at their most prosperous, there were no less than seven different makes of vertical twin available in the market. All factories offered a 500cc model, as well as more expensive larger capacity versions in 600, 650, or 700cc. With the exception of Royal Enfield all motors were of pre-unit construction type although it was fashion, almost as much as function, that dictated BSA and Triumph would soon change exclusively to engines of unit construction. In fact Triumph already had such an engine, the 350cc 3TA, and by 1960 they had their larger size capacities in production. BSA’s first unit engine was delayed until 1962. Designed by Ed Turner, with detail work undertaken by Len Crisp, the new ‘over-square’ (75mm x 74mm) A50/A65 series twins incorporated several Triumph components inside that ultra streamlined exterior. The sports model Spitfire was introduced three years into the build, establishing itself so well it was continued right through to a Mk IV incarnation in 1968. Offered with twin carburetors, alloy rims, full width hubs, and additional chrome plating for several chassis parts – although not usually to fork sliders – the Spitfire was a key model within the company’s product line. The motorcycle offered here has been the subject of recent restoration completed between 2007 and 2008. The gas tank and side covers were restored by Ziggenbein’s Body and Paint. During the restoration, the taking had a new Coswell’s lining installed to allow it to carry modern gasoline. New Boyer electronic ignition and coil were fitted along with a new battery, air cleaners, tires, mufflers, oil lines and rebuilt carburetors. Purchased by the vendor from Valley Cycles in Southern California, it is reported that the bike had previous been stored in a garage in Van Nuys, CA since the late 1980s. A wonderful opportunity to acquire one of BSA’s sportiest road bikes with little more required than a full tank of gas an eager rider! Without reserve
