Introduced at the 1973 Paris Salon, the 308 GT4 was a break-away from the formula of production Ferraris that had preceded it, continuing none of the characteristics that had become associated with the marque. Gone were the Pinin Farina styling and six or twelve cylinder engine units of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Instead, it featured avant-garde wedge shaped bodywork by Bertone, the only production Ferrari to do so, and power was derived from the Grand Prix V8 engine of the mid 1960s. In essence, the GT4 was a more powerful version of the 246 GT, with a slightly longer wheelbase. But it was such a change from its predecessors that it was not surprising that the public reaction was mixed, not least in the USA where for nearly 2 years this was the only new model available. This was further compounded by the 'Dino' badging, as initially there was not a Ferrari name anywhere in sight. Stanley Nowak in his book Ferrari Forty Years on the Road recalls that the limited early sales were not in any way a fair reflection on the car itself recalling 'From the owner/driver point of view the 308 GT4 was a winner! We really had no unhappy customers - just not enough of them' All the same, the GT4 lead to the popular Pinin Farina styled 308 GTB and GTS models, which were built from 1976, and its sales developed continuing to be manufactured until 1980, by which time 2,826 had been built. Today it represents an affordable entry to Ferrari market, with enjoyable performance and handling. This Dino is an original UK right hand drive car, which was sold new in November 1978. A limited file of history with the car confirms that it was exhibited at the 1990 Ferrari Owner's Club Concours at Brocket Hall, having had over £25,000 of work completed the previous year. In the present ownership for approximately 12 years, the GT4 has been maintained on an annual basis, but has had limited use, perhaps best gauged by the 2,000 miles that it has completed in the last eighteen months. The car presents well with tidy unmarked interior and good paintwork, on a recent test drive it started promptly and ran well. It is sold with a current MoT, and road tax, and basic file of bills for maintenance during current ownership.
