Just a few years after introducing the R90/6 and R90S, BMW upped the capacity of its range-topping flat-twins to 980cc for the 1977 season in the form of the R100/7 series, the flagship of this new line-up being the fully-faired R100RS superbike. Although styled like a super-sports machine, the R100RS was actually more of a sports-tourer, which did it no harm whatsoever in BMW's traditional market sector. 'BMWs have always managed to give you a unique and almost uncanny feeling of complete security and stability at speed,' observed Bike magazine's Peter Watson. 'The ability to maintain cruising speeds of over 100 mph for as long as your licence holds out must be one of the machines' most attractive features. The RS even manages to improve on this reputation.' One man who clearly believed the R100RS had greater potential for development was the late Claus Bäte, former proprietor of BMW dealership Autohaus Bäte of Hannover, who commissioned this unique motorcycle in 1993. Constructed in the company's workshops and completely rebuilt in 1998, this 1981 R100RS incorporates a BMW-Motorsport frame with removable right downtube, which carries the engine higher than standard and attaches it using additional mounts. Running gear consists of a BMW K75 front fork with box-section swinging arm and BMW shock absorbers at the rear. The engine incorporates Fallert alloy cylinders, FM racing pistons, lightweight flywheel, 236-degree camshaft, Fallert alloy sump, BMW electronic ignition, 38mm Dell'Orto carburettors and a 2-into-1 exhaust system. Maximum power is 81bhp at 7,500rpm with peak torque of 80Nm produced at 6,400 revs. The BMW gearbox is fitted with a taller first gear and delivers power to the ground via a 3.0:1 ratio final drive. Other noteworthy features include GS-type wire-spoked 18" wheels, Wilwood floating front disc rotors gripped by Brembo 2-piston callipers, KnoScher sports fairing, Pietsch tachometer, oil temperature gauge, BMW '/7' fuel tank with aircraft-type filler cap, and many more too numerous to list. Only 1,261 kilometres have been covered since delivery and the machine is presented in virtually 'as new' condition. Accompanying documentation consists of sundry invoices and German Fahrzeugbrief.
