Styled by Pininfarina, the Camargue was launched in 1975 to a mixture of awe and disbelief. Based on the Silver Shadow, the rakish-looking newcomer was strikingly different from any preceding Rolls-Royce. The company's flagship, it was priced at 50 percent above the Corniche and, like the latter, used an up-rated version of the dependable, 6,750cc V8 engine. In keeping with tradition the power output remained undisclosed, but most testers reported a healthy improvement in acceleration above 70mph and a top speed in excess of 120mph. Rolls-Royce's advanced split-level air conditioning system was introduced with the Camargue, but in all other respects the interior remained the traditional ‘Gentleman’s Club on wheels’, with acres of walnut embellishment and finest-quality leather. Produced at the rate of around one a week, the Camargue was an exclusive model even by Rolls-Royce standards, output totalling just 531 units by the time production ceased in 1986. Its price at the finish? A cool £83,122. With the bulk of production destined for overseas customers, the majority of Camargues was built with left-hand drive, which makes this right-hand drive example (just 140 were built) of one of the rarest and most desirable of post-war Rolls-Royces even more unusual. The car was acquired by the present owner in 1987 at 39,000 miles. Little used since 1996, by which time the mileage recorded had risen to 70,240, it is presented in very good condition in all respects having benefited from re-commissioning in 2003 that included a re-spray and refurbishment of interior wood and leather. Expired MoTs relating to the period of present ownership verify the recorded mileage, which currently stands at 70,372. The car comes with complete Rolls-Royce service history to circa 30,000 miles and last underwent a major service - at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ London Service Centre, School Road, North Acton - in 1990 at 59,000 miles. Finished in Balmoral Green with magnolia hide upholstery and original Vaughan biscuit carpeting, the latter factory fitted to special order, the vehicle is offered with large history file, all service and handbooks, and Swansea V5 registration document.
