John Gilroy (1898-1985) A DESIGN FOR A GUINNESS POSTER Gouache 51.5 x 37.5cm, unframed Born in Whitley Bay, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, John Gilroy showed a love of drawing from a very young age, copying cartoons from 'Punch', and was a cartoonist for Newcastle's 'Evening Chronicle' from the age of 15. He won a scholarship to Durham University, but his studies were interrupted by World War 1, during which he served with the Royal Field Artillery. He resumed his studying by taking a place at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1923, but staying on as a teacher until 1925. After joining the advertising agency, S H Benson Ltd., he worked on campaigns for Bovril, Skippers Sardines and Colmans of Norwich, but is most well-known for his designs for Guinness. These included the 'Guinness for Strength' campaigns of the early 19
