GREGORY, H. Fl. 1860s. Album of 35 original pen, ink and watercolor drawings, 162 x 253 mm and smaller, the majority signed "HG," a few signed "H. Gregory," a few unsigned but in the same hand, mounted on 18 leaves, bound in half red morocco album, 400 x 320 mm, spine gilt in 6 compartments, black morocco lettering piece. An amusing album of comic art by a talented but unknown artist, echoing the styles of Cruikshank, Crowquill, Griset, and other popular 19th century illustrators. A series of drawings spoof the drinkers of different types of beer: a toff drinks mild, a laborer drinks stout, and a curmudgeon drinks "old and bitter." In another series, the artist spoofs a naturalist "pinning" frogs in the first panel, only to be "pinned" himself by a native in the next with a moth asking, "How do you like it?" One panel shows an elegant woman in a full hoop skirt and bonnet lifting her hem to show off her shoes. Another shows a gentleman at the beech started by a figure in a diving bell rising up out of the sea above the caption, "The wonders of the deep." Charming.
