19th century Garden Retreat Ink and colour on silk, the large elaborate painting depicting a luscious garden retreat, with a pair of seated scholar officials in the centre, each flanked by attendants and holding pipes, the lower right foreground with three seated ladies fishing and smoking pipes, being brought tea by an elder servant, the lower left foreground with an elderly scholar and his student, both standing by an open pavilion, enclosing a circular table with a selection of scholar's objects, including inkstones, books, a waterpot, scroll-weight and a pile of books, above them another open pavilion sheltering two court ladies and female attendant, beside them a young man holding a gnarled staff, all set within opulent landscaped surroundings, with ornamental rockwork, a duck pond, bridges, willow, plantain and pine trees, with a network of halls and pavilions seen in the background, framed. 189.8cm x 275.3cm (74¾in x 108¼in).
