Half-title, title in red and black, 4pp preface, 4pp subscriber's list, 27pp text, engraved dedication and 161 plates (11 explanatory plates and 150 designs). (Light surface damage to plate LXXXII). Modern brown morocco gilt, g.e., by Wood of London, slipcase. Provenance : F.J.Haut (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. [Together with:] a uniformly bound copy of the third edition, London: 1762, 2°, title, 2pp preface, 20pp text, engraved dedication and the 110 variant plates, slipcase. THE IDEAL COMBINATION, GIVING THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF DESIGNS BY CHIPPENDALE. The majority of the plates in the first edition were at least reworked and in some cases replaced in the third edition. The present set includes 260 plates of designs; a complete copy of the third edition includes only 192. Sold not subject to return. (2)
