Title: 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards. Household Brigade Drag Hounds, 1893-1894 Author: [Marker, Raymond John] Place: Windsor Publisher: Oxley & Son Date: 1895 Description: [vi], 43, [2] pp. 22 full-page illustrations from photographs and drawings. (Oblong 4to) 24.5x33.5 cm (10x13¼") period half-morocco and boards, lettered in gilt. First Edition. Fox hunting, minus the fox. Drag hunting first developed as a way to test foxhounds, but it had turned into its own sport by the middle of the 19th century. Army officers enjoyed the faster-paced drag hunt at least as far back as 1863; even today, the military has a pack of drag hounds. The sport is reliant on the goodwill and cooperation of landowners and farmers." The book's narrative begins, "The Battalion arrived at Windsor from Uffington at the end of manoeuvres, On September 16th, 1893. The following day being Sunday, a well-attended levee was held at the Kennels, and a list of names being provided by Caley, attempts were made to fit them to various hounds." No copies located on OCLC. Lot Amendments Condition: Binding worn; a bit yellowed; very good. Item number: 285539
