an uncommon unit example showing typical Civil War construction that we have not seen before. High relief insignia measures 2.5" wide by 2" tall with richly embroidered 2nd Engineer within wreath. Backing is black oilcloth. The only possible Federal unit this can represent is the obscure 2nd Corps de Afrique Engineers organized at New Orleans in August 1863 and attached to the Engineer Brigade, Dept. of the Gulf. The designation of the regiment was changed to the 96th USCT in April 1864. The Confederate Army organized a 2nd Engineer Regiment in 1863 attached to the Army of Northern Virginia but, of course, this insignia bears no Southern hallmarks. Condition: Insignia is EXC with slight tarnish.
