Luis Emilio (1844-1918) began his military career at the young age of 16, and advanced quickly through the ranks, eventually being promoted to captain in 1863, and becoming acting commander of the regiment after sustaining a brutal assault on Fort Wagner. Emilio published the first edition of Brave Black Regiment in 1891, a documentation of the history of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteers. Condition: CDV retains deep, rich tonality.
