3 vol. in 1, first edition, half-title, stipple-engraved portrait of Alexander I after G.Kugelkan, dedication and preface in English and French, 100 hand-coloured soft-ground etchings with some aquatint by Atkinson, light marginal water-staining, a few lightly browned and spotted, [Abbey, Travel 223; Colas 171; Tooley 72], printed by W.Bulmer & Co., for the Proprietors, 1803-04 [watermarked 1801] bound with [Mouradja d'Ohsson (Ignace de)] Tableau Général de l'Empire Othoman, vol.1 only (of 3), no text, plates only comprising engraved vignette title and plates 1-40 on 22 sheets only (lacking plates 13, 19 & 36, often lacking some plates), 3 double-page, and with 2 double-page engraved tables, folding calendar and sheet of Arabic characters, also with letterpress dedication with engraved coat-of-arms and 4pp. list of plates at end, some light marginal spotting or soiling, [Atabey 846; Blackmer 1164; Cohen-de Ricci 763], Paris, 1787, together 2 works in 1 vol., nineteenth century half green straight-grain morocco, spine gilt and titled "Russians and Turks", g.e., rubbed and damp-stained, spine and corners rather worn, upper joint repaired, folio *** The first work is a survey of the Russian Empire by James Walker with plates by his nephew, John Augustus Atkinson The delicate plates depict soldiers, peasants and country occupations including cutting ice, transporting charcoal by boat, fishing etc., as well as town and country amusements such as bathing, boxing, racing, dancing and sliding down ice hills. "These plates of Atkinson's show the spontaneity and spirit possible when the artist is his own engraver." (Abbey) The second item is part of an important account of the Ottoman Empire, with many plates after drawings by J.B.Hilaire who accompanied Choiseul-Gouffier on his journey to the Levant in 1776. They include scenes of Muslim religious observances and interiors of mosques, chapels and libraries. This copy lacks plates 13, 19 & 36 (public bath for Mahometan women, inside of the mosque of S.Sophia, inside of chapel of Valide Terkhann Sultana). The Atabey copy also lacked plate 19 and according to Atabey the work frequently lacks plates 12, 19 & 26 (Mussulman performing his ablution, interior of S.Sophia, chapel in the seraglio with relics of the Prophet). This appears to be a mistake as Cohen-de Ricci states that plates 12, 19 & 36 are missing in most copies (plate 26 is on the same sheet as plate 27). It also seems more likely that the plate of the women's bath (plate 13) might have been removed.
