A 15ct. gold & enamel Rugby League Challenge Cup winner's medal 1930, the obverse inscribed LANCASHIRE, YORKSHIRE, CUMBERLAND, RUGBY FOOTBALL LEAGUE, the reverse inscribed WIDNES FOOTBALL CLUB, WINNERS 1930, R. TOPPING, in original fitted case (2) Widnes RFLC won the first of their seven Challenge Cups in 1930 defeating League Champions St Helens 10-3 at Wembley. It was a mismatch on paper with St Helens boasting a team who had all played at international or county level. Widnes fielded mostly local lads but defied all odds to win the match through tries by Ratcliffe & Dennett This medal was won by Peter Topping, who was also a member of the 1937 Challenge Cup winning team. Topping played in 414 games for Widnes, scoring 96 tries and 195 goals.
