A buff sandstone stele of Gauri India, Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh, 9th/10th century Standing on a lotus base holding a lotus blossom in her upper right hand a crooked staff in her upper left hand, and a water vessel in her lower left, dressed in an ankle-length dhoti with the folds finely delineated and adorned with an ascetic's belt, the face with full lips and almond-shaped eyes, the locks of hair arranged in a chignon, flanked by two attendant figures and an adoring lion and bull 14¾ in. (37.4 cm.) high
