A Collection of Awards for the Indian Mutiny 1857-59 Pair: Lieutenant-Colonel J. S. Frith, Bengal Horse Artillery, who served as Brigade Major of Artillery during the Indian Mutiny, over the course of which he received recognition in Major-General Outram’s Despatches for Lucknow Punjab 1848-49, no clasp (Lieut. J. S. Frith, 3rd Tp. 1st Bde. H. Arty); Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 2 clasps, Delhi, Lucknow (1st Lieut. J, S. Frith, Bengal H. Arty. 1st Bde.) contact marks, very fine (2) £1000-1200 Footnote Provenance: Spink, July 2005. John Sabatier Frith was commissioned Second Lieutenant, Bengal Horse Artillery, in 1845. He advanced to Lieutenant in 1849, and served with Brigadier Wheeler’s Force during the Punjab Campaign 1848-49. Promoted Captain (Brevet Major) in 1858, Frith served as Brigade Major of Artillery during the Indian Mutiny and was present at the actions of Hindun, and the siege and capture of Delhi (notice of service mentioned by Major H. Tombs, Horse Artillery, Commanding Column, Camp before Delhi, 18 June 1857; and similarly mentioned by Major F. Gaitskell, Officer Commanding the Artillery Brigade, Field Force Delhi, 19 September 1857). Frith served during the siege and capture of Lucknow (Mentioned in Major General Outram’s Despatches for Lucknow; similarly Mentioned by Major General Sir A. Wilson Commanding Artillery Division during operations at Lucknow; and notice of service mentioned by Brigadier D. Wood, Commander of Field Artillery during the Siege of Lucknow). Lieutenant-Colonel Frith served as ADC on the Governor of Bombay’s (Sir R. Temple) Personal Staff, and died at Meerut in September 1872.
