A collection of Greek garments to include; a womanÆs shift, probably from Macedonia, of white linen, with solid embroidery at the cuffs, neck edge, hem and risers in dark brown twist wool with touches of copper, dark blue and sage, 106cm long, (Emed-45); a womanÆs shift from Olymbos, Karpathos, of white cotton with seersucker selvedges, with small red and black flowers down sleeves, cross stitch in geometric patterns - cross and diagonal lines at cuff, and ævinesÆ at neck, in black, pink, copper, and green wool, and with picot edging to cuffs and neck, 115cm long, (EE-76) See photographic archive of women in Olymbos wearing their costume. They were also still weaving the fabric and making their shifts and coats themselves. Bought from Rigo Balan in Olymbos, who made it, 1996; a womanÆs everyday blue coat from Olymbos, patched in black, with a traditional three-petal motif in red and blue around the edges, and machine embroidered, with pink twist braid, 112.5cm long (EE-77); included are photos of women baking bread etc. wearing these coats. Bought from Rigo Balan in Olymbos 1996. She was the only person selling costumes. This was the only coat she had as theyÆre mostly worn till theyÆre in rags; a womanÆs scarf, sash and apron, the black scarf with painted flower edging worn by most women in Olymbos and Diafani, and brought to the island from Athens or Rhodes, the flowered sash to be worn round the coat, and a blue and pink flowered apron, (EE-78). All as worn every day by women of Olymbos and Diafani. See photos of women dressed in these.
