A collection of Sir David Milne's naval commissions, comprising, COPY COMMISSION: MR DAVID MILNE TO BE THIRD LIEUTENANT OF H.M.S. BLANCHE , 13TH JANUARY 1794. Handwritten in ink on laid paper, originally folded to 12 ½"x7 ¾" (32 x 19.5cm), this contemporary "True Copy" of Milne's first commission records him being appointed by Vice-Admiral Sir John Jervis KB, "Commander in Chief…at Barbadoes, and the Leeward Islands and the Seas adjacent". COMMISSION: LIEUTENANT DAVID MILNE TO BE FIRST LIEUTENANT OF H.M.S. BLANCHE , 6TH JANUARY 1795. Handwritten in ink on vellum, with a wafer seal and 11"x13" (28 x 33cm), this commission is signed by Vice-Admiral Benjamin Caldwell, "Commander in Chief…at Barbadoes…" and issued by the admiral's secretary, Lachlan McLean. As a document appointing a Scot, prepared by a Scot and signed by a Scot, a better manuscript example of the Scottish presence in the Royal Navy at the time would be hard to find. H.M.S. Blanche was a Fifth Rate, 32 guns, 1786-99. COMMISSION: CAPTAIN DAVID MILNE TO BE CAPTAIN OF H.M.S. SEINE , 6TH NOVEMBER 1798. Printed on vellum, 11"x12 ½" (28 x 32cm), with handwritten additions in ink, the wafered impression of the seal of the Lord High Admiral and a two shilling and sixpenny duty stamp. Signed by the Secretary to the Admiralty, Evan Nepean, and three Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, Rear Admiral James Gambier, Rear Admiral William Young and Thomas Wallace Esq. MP. H.M.S. Seine was a Fifth Rate, 38 guns, captured 1798, wrecked 1803. COMMISSION: CAPTAIN DAVID MILNE TO BE CAPTAIN OF H.M.S. SEINE 26TH MAY 1803. Printed on vellum, 11"x13" (28 x 33cm), with handwritten additions in ink, the wafered impression of the seal of the Lord High Admiral and a two shilling and sixpenny duty stamp. Signed by the Secretary to the Admiralty, Evan Nepean, and three Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, Sir Philip Stephens, Bart. MP, Captain Sir Thomas Troubridge, Bart., RN and Captain John Markham RN MP. H.M.S. Seine was a Fifth Rate, 32 guns, captured 1798, wrecked 1803. COMMISSION: CAPTAIN DAVID MILNE TO BE CAPTAIN OF H.M.S. IMPETUEUX 7TH AUGUST 1811. Printed on vellum, 10 ¾" x 12 ½" (27.5 x 32cm), with handwritten additions in ink, the wafered impression of the seal of the Lord High Admiral and a five shilling duty stamp. Signed by the Secretary to the Admiralty, John Wilson Croker, and three Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, Admiral Richard Bickerton MP, James Buller Esq. MP and Vice-Admiral William Domett. H.M.S. Impetueux was a Third Rate, 74 guns, captured as Amerique 1st June 1794 and renamed; broken up 1813. COMMISSION: CAPTAIN DAVID MILNE TO BE CAPTAIN OF H.M.S. DUBLIN 29TH JULY 1812. Printed on vellum, 11"x12 ¾" (28 x 32.5cm), with handwritten additions in ink, the wafered impression of the seal of the Lord High Admiral and a five shilling duty stamp. Signed by the Secretary to the Admiralty, John Wilson Croker, and three Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, Vice-Admiral William Domett, The Hon. Frederick Robinson MP and (probably) Lord Walpole. H.M.S. Dublin was a Third Rate, 74 guns, 1812-85. Milne was her first captain. COMMISSION: CAPTAIN DAVID MILNE TO BE CAPTAIN OF H.M.S. VENERABLE 15TH AUGUST 1812. Printed on vellum, 11"x13" (28 x 33cm), with handwritten additions in ink and a five shilling duty stamp (the wafered impression of the seal of the Lord High Admiral having been removed). Signed by the Secretary to the Admiralty, John Wilson Croker, and three Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, Vice-Admiral William Domett, Rear Admiral Sir Joseph Yorke MP and The Rt. Hon.
