A COMPOSITE ARMOUR The Helmet Bowl Muromachi Period (Late 15th/Early 16th Century) The Rest Edo Period (18th Century) Comprising a fine twelve-plate black-lacquered iron helmet of akoda-nari form [swelling towards the back] simply signed Haruta and mounted with a six-tier mixed metal tehen-kanamono [finial] and a simple gilt copper circle maedate [forecrest], the five-lame komanju-jikoro [small rounded neck-guard] of gold lacquered kiritsuke-kozane [imitation lamellae] with flame colour lacing, the fukigaeshi [turnbacks to the neck-guard] lacquered red and black with gilt fukurin [edging] and a gilt katabami mon [oxalis crest], the black-lacquered iron Nara-style mask with hair moustache and chin tuft and silvered teeth, the five-lame gold-lacquered kiritsuke-kozane yodarekake [throat defence of imitation lamellae] with red kebiki-odoshi [close lacing], the chu-sode [medium-sized shoulder guards] and the fine large nimai-do [two-piece cuirass] of gold-lacquered iron kiritsuke-kozane [imitation lamellae] with red kebiki odoshi [close lacing], with matching leather kusazuri [tassets], the upper front plate with the ken-katabami mon [oxalis and sword crest] in gold lacquer, the tate-ire [standing collar] edged with red and white crepe silk, the mask, shoulderguards and cuirass matching; the good russet-iron Kaga-style Oda-gote [sleeves] and kawara-haidate [thigh guards] in red- and black-lacquered leather, with a pair of black-lacquered iron Shino-suneate [shin guards
