Title: A Description of the Island of St. Michael Author: Webster, John W. Place: Boston Publisher: R.P. & C. Williams Date: 1821 Description: 244 pp. Two engraved folding maps, one folding table, 3 engraved plates. (8vo) 21.5x13 cm (8½x5") period half calf and marbled boards, red leather spine label, spine ruled in gilt. First Edition. The is Webster's principal scientific work, a discussion of he formation of the island and an examination of the custom of the people of the Azores, he is best remembered for committing one of the most sensational murders of the 19th century. In 1847 Webster borrowed $400 from George Parkman, securing the loan with a cabinet of minerals. When Webster turned the minerals over to another party for a second loan, Parkman became incensed, argued with Webster, and then disappeared. Parkman's bones were discovered in Webster's laboratory, and after a sensational trial, Webster was hanged. Lot Amendments Condition: Rubbed, leather a bit dry; folding plates splitting along folds; foxing throughout; good. Item number: 257141
