A DOUCAI 'DRAGON' BOWLGuangxu six-character mark and of the period
The rounded body decorated with two iron red five-clawed dragons each chasing a flaming pearl among scrolling coloured clouds, above a band of frothing waves and below a diaper band to the rim, detailed in gilt, the interior with a circular shou character roundel enclosed by five bats in underglaze blue. 13.5cm (5 3/8in) diam.FootnotesProvenance: From the collection of Barry C Tattenhall (1907-1989), thence by descent to the present owners.
Barry Tattenhall was a well-regarded collector of Chinese porcelain and member of the Oriental Ceramic Society and lent porcelain to their 1950 Polychrome Exhibition and 1964 Qing Exhibition.
David and Jellinek (2011, Provenance. Collectors, Dealers and Scholars: Chinese Ceramics in Britain and America) describe him as "ahead of his time with his interest in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Imperial porcelain". A number of pieces from his collection were sold at Sotheby's on 12 December 1989.
