A facsimile printing of Eugène Flandin's Perse Moderne, part of Voyage en Perse pendant les années 1840 et 1841
Burness Faridany Ltd., London, 1976photo offset lithograph facsimile, no. 493 of an edition of 600, 100 pages of plates (each with either one or two plates per page), two title pages and table of contents (two sheets), 1976 introductory essay, sheet giving edition number, in green cloth-covered box album
plates 61 x 43 cm.; box album 62.5 x 45 cm.FootnotesEugene Flandin (1809-76) travelled to Persia in 1840, attached to the French diplomatic mission there. Alongside the architect Pascal Coste (1787-1879), he made hundreds of drawings of buildings and landscapes, both contemporary and ancient, and the result, on his return, was one of the finest records of the Persia of that time. Flandin received the Légion d'Honneur in 1842 for his part in the mission.
Perse Moderne was part of a six-volume work, Voyage en Perse pendant les années 1840 et 1841, published in Paris by Gide et J. Baudry between 1843 and 1854. The six volumes were published serially in seventy parts issued over ten years, Perse Ancienne in fifty parts, Perse Moderne in twenty parts, each priced at 20 francs. The original is rare. Our facsimile is after the original in the British Library (and printed with its permission). The subjects include views in Tabriz, Tehran, Kashan, Isfahan, Hamadan, Shiraz, and the ancient site at Persepolis.
