A Fine 24-Bore German Silver-Mounted Flintlock Sporting Gun In The French Taste By Peter Wittemann A Giessen (Hessen), circa 1720-30 With fine earlier heavy Turkish four-stage twist barrel inlaid with gold arabesques in raised panels and with engraved gold bands at the intersections and at the rear of the breech, moulded muzzle inlaid with silver and gold and with silver fore-sight, sixteen-sided breech section with gold-lined stamp, 'The work of Mustafa', engraved tang with applied gilt-brass back-sight, signed flat border engraved lock with bevelled border decorated with the figure of Diana and a trophy of the chase on the tail (top jaw and screw expertly replaced), the pan and steel with some original blued finish, moulded figured walnut full stock (minor bruising) carved in relief with acanthus foliage and with a grotesque mask between the trigger-guard and rear ramrod-pipe, full cast and chased silver mounts of Parisian pattern book inspiration including engraved solid side-plate, large pierced escutcheon with a profile Classical warrior's bust at its centre, carved cheek-piece, four octagonal ramrod-pipes, border engraved trigger-plate with foliate finial, and wood-tipped ramrod, the butt-plate engraved 'No 2', preserved in very fine little-used condition throughout 47in. (119.4cm.) barrel
