A fine and rare 'qiang jin' lacquer 'dragon' box and cover inlaid with a wucai porcelain 'figure' plaque Ming Dynasty, Jiajing period the box of shallow cylindrical form, finely decorated in characteristic qiang jin technique with incised and gilt outlines, the base with a scaly five-clawed dragon in pursuit of a 'flaming pearl', writhing amidst swirling ruyi-shaped clouds above crested waves, enclosed within a sunken quatre-lobed border, the sides each carved with four squirrels climbing on leafy vine branches bearing large brushes of grapes, the cover inlaid with a circular porcelain plaque painted in colours of the wucai palette with two sages sitting in contemplation beside a burning censer issuing a large billowing cloud of smoke in a peaceful mountain setting, the interior lacquered black Quantity: 2 11cm., 4 5/16 in.
