The case with signed pierced sound frets for the casemaker John Holl The brass-banded inverted bell topped case surmounted by five ball and spire finials over a moulded cornice, on a stepped base and ogee brass feet, the side sound frets each of arched rectangular form with a stylised wheatear border framing the series of interlaced foliate scrolls, central urn and female portraits under a canopy signed 'John Holl, Casemaker', the right hand panel hinged so as to offer sight of the movement, the 6.5 inch arched brass dial surmounted by three tapered apertures giving the day and celestial body within a foliate border, the upper corners with subsidiaries for rise-and-fall regulation and strike/silent over the Roman and Arabic chapter ring displaying half quarters and floating half hour numerals, the finely matted centre with signed mock pendulum aperture and chamfered date aperture, all framed by an ivory veneered inner edge, the triple wire fusee movement with substantial plates united by eight pillars, the verge escapement with rise and fall regulation, striking the hours on a bell and chiming the quarters on a run of six bells and hammers, the backplate with engraved stylised wheatear border framing an elaborate symmetrical pattern of foliate scrolls centred by a basket of flowers over an oval signature cartouche 57cms (22.5ins) high
