A FINELY CARVED SPINACH-GREEN JADE BRUSH POT, BITONG
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
A FINELY CARVED SPINACH-GREEN JADE BRUSH POT, BITONG QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795) Raised on six ruyi -shaped supports, the thick, cylindrical sides are finely and deeply carved with scenes from the Elegant Gathering in the West Garden , depicting eminent scholars celebrating Su Shi's return from exile in a continuous dramatic mountain landscape. One scene depicts scholars and female attendants gathered around a table watching a seated scholar painting. To their left are two scholars, one playing a musical instrument, beneath the gnarled branches of a tree. In a further scene, two scholars watch another seated at a low table painting, and in another group a scholar paints on a rock face while an attendant holds an inkstone. Two more figures are depicted, one reading, the other kneeling before a monk on a rocky promontory overlooking a rushing waterfall. A table on one side is set with a qin and various scholars' articles. The various scenes are set below a cloud-enshrouded rim, the stone is of deep green color with some paler mottling and dark speckling throughout. 6 5/8 in. (17 cm.) high, wood stand
