A French engraved brass compass sundial By Micheal Butterfield (1635-1724), Paris, late 17th/early 18th century Engraved with the hours for latitudes 52, 49, 46 and 43, the inset compass with sixteen compass points, blued-iron needle with glazed cover, the center signed Butterfield Paris , the folding gnomon with bird-shaped pointer, and graduated 40-60, the underside engraved with latitudes for thirty-one continental cities and towns; with contemporary case covered in fishskin and lined in green filt 7.3 cm. wide x 6.7 cm. wide
