A George II carved giltwood pier mirror, circa 1755, the asymmetrical pierced cresting above a conforming carved and pierced rococo surround with a divided plate, 236cm high, 104cm wide, re-gilt, the upper plate replaced The overall design of the present mirror with the exception of the cresting, has affinities with those of Matthias Lock (See J.F. Hayward, 'Furniture designed and carved by Matthias Lock for Hinton House, Somerset', Connoisseur, January 1961, pp. 284-286). A further pair of mirrors which bear comparison to the Hinton House examples is illustrated in L. Synge, Mallett's Great English Furniture, London, 1991, p. 86, fig. 91). Two pairs of Scottish mirrors which also parallel the overall configuration of the offered lot were supplied by William Mathie for Dumfries House in 1759 (See F. Bamford, 'Dictionary of Edinburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers', Furniture History, 1983, pls. 14 and 15.) Lock published various pattern books such as Six Sconces, 1744, and A New Book of Ornaments for Looking Glass Frames, 1752. Lock's ornamental engravings after the French fashion were to gain him contemporary recognition as England's 'best draftsman in that way' Another mirror of a related pattern, sold Christie's London, 10 April 2003, lot 4.
