Hewlings, Chiswick House , London, 1989, p.9). This same pattern is also recorded at Devonshire House, London - dating from both the 1730's and 1820's for the improvements carried out by the 6th Duke of Devonshire. A further related pattern of bracket is illustrated in J. Vardy, Some Designs of Mr. Inigo Jones and Mr. William Kent , 1744 (pl.20). Stone brackets based on this design are at Houghton Hall, Norfolk (A. Moore, Houghton Hall , London, 1996, p. 113). A pair of brackets of comparable design sold Christie's London 'A View over Eaton Square', 10 November 2005, lot 316. Two giltwood wall brackets bearing a labels inscribed 'John Lane of Knightsbridge', sold Sotheby's 30 November 1962, lot 214 (See Geoffrey Beard and Christopher Gilbert, The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, 1986, p. 525). The entry suggests that Lane traded during the early 19 th century which suggests that he may have re-gilded the two brackets here for the purposes of retailing them.
