A GEORGE II LARGE BRASS-MOUNTED WALNUT FOUR-TRAIN MUSICAL EIGHT DAY LONGCASE CLOCK THOMAS EAYRE KETTERING. CIRCA 1730 The case of substantial proportions, with ogee-moulded caddy top surmounted by a lunette cresting and with three brass ball and spire finials, fretwork panels to the front and side cornices, above the brass-lined door and to the sides, with outset plain brass columns and conforming half columns to the rear, the well-figured trunk with canted angles, chevron inlays, the arched door framed by a brass moulding, above plinth with conforming canted angles and centred by a brass-framed raised octagonal panel with chevron inlays, on brass-bound double foot, restorations to cheekboards, the inside of the case door with paper label for 'Percy Webster Clockmaker/At the Sign of the Golden Time & Dial' and punched with his number '9550', the 13½ in. wide brass dial with musical trophy engraving to the lower edge, mask and foliate spandrels to Roman and Arabic chapter ring with diamond half hour markers, the matted centre with engraved border to date square and with subsidiary seconds ring, with subsidiary rings with flowerhead engraved centres for strike/silent and chime/not chime, the arch with further engraving of musical trophies and heralds, with nine tune music selection arch ('The 23d Psalm, Hymn of Eve, Saw you my father, Andant in Haydn's Overture, The Captive to his bird, Fresh & strong the breeze, Come ever smiling liberty, the 104th Psalm, march in a day in Turkey'), centred by an inset signature plaque for 'Thomas Eayre/KETTERING'), blued steel hands, the substantial seven pillar movement with anchor escapement, hour rack strike on bell and three hourly music on seventeen bells with thirty-three hammers via 15½ in. long pinned cylinder, the underside of the hour wheel bridge punched '1726'; the music barrel and selection arch replaced later in the 18th Century; brass rod pendulum stamped '799/TE' and scratch-engraved '1726', four brass weights, crank key, case key See movement detail page 229 in the printed catalogue 111½ in.
