A GEORGE II SILVER SOUP-TUREEN AND COVER WITH AN ASSOCIATED LADLE MARK OF GEORGE WICKES LONDON, THE TUREEN 1742 THE LADLE 1743 The oval tureen on four lion paw and ball feet capped with lion's masks, each side applied with rocaille cartouche surrounded by convolvulus and laurel branches, with two shell and foliage capped handles, with a ribbon tied reeded rim, the detachable cover chased with panels surrounded by flowers, and scalework, the cover and body each engraved twice with a crest below an earl's coronet, the ladle with a bird mask terminal, engraved with crest, the tureen marked underneath and inside cover, the base engraved with number and scratchweight 'N o 1 147=10', the ladle marked on back of bowl, further engraved with number and scratchweight 'N o 2 10=19' and later stamped 'Breadalbane' the tureen 18 in. (46 cm.) wide over handles the ladle 13¾ in. (35 cm.) long 156 oz. (4,956 gr.) The crest is that of Leeson for Joseph Leeson, 1st Earl of Milltown (1701-1783). (2)
