A George II sterling silver kettle stand, London 1755 by William Peaston Of tri-lobed form with gadrooned rim all upon three pad feet. The field centre engraved with a contemporaneous impaled coat of arms within an oval cartouche reserved with foliage. Fully marked to the reverse. Length – 22.6 cm / 8.9 inches Weight – 346 grams / 11.12 ozt The arms are for Neale quartering Barry impaling Elliot (or Eliot) For Pendock Neale (1728-1772) who married on the 3rd April 1753 Harriet Eliot (1731-1776), they resided at Tollerton Hall, Nottinghamshire. Pendock was the son of John Neale (168-1749) and Elizabeth Major (1692-1741), he was listed on many occasions as a ‘privateer’. Harriet the daughter of Richard Eliot MP (1694-1748) and Harriot (1712-1769) the illegitimate daughter of secretary of state James Craggs and the actress Hester Santlow. Her brother was Edward Craggs-Eliot, 1st Baron Eliot (1727-1804) In Charles Deering’s ‘An Historical Account of the Ancient and Present State of the Town of Nottingham’ (1751) Tollerton Hall is referred to as ‘a pleasant house’ that ‘of late had very much altered and improved by John Neale, Esq who at present lives in it’. These arms as a hatchment are on the west wall of the squires pew of Tollerton St Peter church for Pendock Neale (1728-1773).
