A GEORGE III MAHOGANY COMMODE ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS CHIPPENDALE the eared concave-sided rectangular top with moulded edge above two cupboard doors with circular central panels in stiff-leaf borders framed with key-pattern ebony bands, the frieze inlaid with ebony key-pattern lines, the centre carved with pendant bellflowers headed by acanthus, the angles with lion-mask volutes facing sideways hung with husk swags suspended from and headed by paterae, the moulded volutes carved with stiff-leaves centred by beading, the panelled front angles with paterae, acanthus and bellflowers, the spreading curved sides crossbanded and mounted with foliate gilt-lacquered brass carrying-handles, the interior with six mahogany-lined drawers and two removable racks of alphabetically lettered pigeon-holes with rosewood spandrels inlaid with ivory letters, the lower edge carved with entrelac-and-rosette centred by a foliate clasp, on splayed square panelled key-pattern feet, carved with stiff leaves centred by beading and paterae, the lock stamped E. GASGOIGNE, the back left hand corner of the top repaired, back left foot repaired, repairs to central husk carving, the interior originally fitted with two long drawers below the pigeon- holes, each now divided to form two short drawers 62¼in. (158cm.) wide; 23¼in. (59cm.) deep; 35¼in. (89cm.) high
