A George III mahogany crossbanded oak longcase clock, 31cm square brass dial John Smith/Bettley, the silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic ... numerals, masks and flowering leafy scrolls to spandrels, subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, twin winding holes, eight-day movement striking on a bell, the hood with moulded outswept cornice and parcel-gilt reeded columns, shaped rectangular door to waist flanked by reeded quarter-columns, ogee bracket feet, 196cm high, c.1780 John Smith is previously unrecorded, but was born in the parish of Betley, Staffordshire, son of Morris Smith, in 1740 and was working from 1762. He appears to have still been living when his grandson John was baptised in 1800. Read more
