A George III silver mounted shagreen etui of drawing instruments Watkins, London, late 18th century The tapered oblong shagreen veneered case with silver clasp button, hinge and collar mounts, the interior enclosing two brass and steel compass dividers complete with interchangeable pen/pencil attachments, an ivory and brass folding sector signed Watkins, London, an ivory ruler engraved with mathematical plotting and protractor scales stamped *Watkins*London* and a file, the case 17cm (6.75ins) high. The current lot was most likely made by Walter Watkins who is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as working from 5 Charing Cross, London 1784-98. Alternatively the set could have been supplied by William Watkins (senior) who Clifton records as working from several addresses in St. James Street, London, 1784-1809.
