A GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE with swamped four-stage sighted barrel (back-sight missing) rifled with six grooves, dated grooved octagonal breech inlaid with a medallion within a laurel wreath in engraved brass, incised with brass-lined initials AG between small stamped stars and struck three times with brass-lined eagle mark within a shield, the muzzle overlaid with brass engraved with two marine monsters divided by a line of ropework, flat lock decorated with applied pierced brass panels engraved with scrolls, foliage, a monster, a profile head, and a putto-mask, and with swivelling safety-catch and slotted pan-cover release button, the cock engraved with two marine monsters, the interior of the lock with engraved details, full stock profusely inlaid with staghorn scrolls, pellets, leaves, birds, berries and ball-flowers, inhabited by monsters and masks, all between horn lines and borders (some defective, panel missing from cheek-piece) engraved with ropework and running designs of pellets, scrollwork, fruit, foliage and demi-figures, and with a small dated panel in front of the pan-cover, engraved horn butt-plate with iron button, engraved horn fore-end cap (defective), later iron trigger-guard, set trigger with brass plate, and associated wooden ramrod (horn ramrod-pipe missing, patch-box cover replaced), dated 1592 32½in. barrel
