He briefly played for Glasgow Rangers before joining the famous Lancashire side Darwen in 1879. It was with Darwen that the first seeds of controvesy were sown and the allegations of 'professionalism' were banded about. He mysteriously gave-up his day job as a stonemason and with no other obvious source of income he led a comfortable life playing his beloved football. A strong and athletic full-back, Suter left Darwen for Blackburn Rovers in 1880 for 'personal reasons' and it is believed he was offered 'better terms' by Rovers although this cannot officially be confirmed. During the Pre-Football League era, Suter helped Blackburn Rovers to become the best team in the country and he appeared in four F.A.Cup finals, winning three, including the one the above medal represents. He formed a formidable partnership with Doc Greenwood who was a true amateur and England International and he played a total of 38 F.A.Cup matches for Rovers, scoring three goals
