A goldwork cover from the Kabul area, c. 1935-40, made by a Muslim girl for her wedding, arranged when she was about 16 years old, 33cm x 33cm, (As-11). It contained kohl, to show she was beautiful, sweetmeats to show she could cook, and the embroidery showed that she could sew. Given to a friend when she lived in Afghanistan in the 1950s; an Uzbek Lakai bedding cover, sayegosha, worked in cross stitch and other embroidery, with bright flowers and applied trinkets, (As-13); a wedding cloth of green silk with patched borders worked in chain stitch, and with a triangular amulet with three tassels in the corner, 87cm x 108cm, (As-45). Bought from an Afghan dealer in Peshawar, 1991; and five cut-up strips of embroidery with oval patterns in various colours of flowers of shisha, (As-25). Bought by an English woman in Kabul in c. 1975 and used as a belt, collar and cuffs; this modern work is known as æQuettaÆ
