A grand piano by Broadwood, London, 1821 The rosewood case inlaid with brass floral patterns and with cast gilt metal decoration running above the base mouldings, raised on four possibly later turned legs with brass collars. The rosewood keywell profusely inlaid with brass floral motifs, the nameboard bearing a white label inscribed: John Broadwood & Sons, Makers to Their Majesties & the Princesses, Great Pulteney Street Golden Square, London. Six octave keyboard CC-c4 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. English grand action. Two pedals, mounted on a lyre, controlling dampers and keyboard shift. Serial number 8948 Length 248cm, width 115cm, case height including lid and leg blocks 38cm. Literature: The Colt Clavier Collection Golden Jubilee 1944-1981, p. 11, (16) G203B. C. F. Colt with Anthony Miall, The Early Piano, ill. p. 79. Provenance: Purchased from Sebastian Morley during the 2nd world war for £10. Three entries for this piano have been found in Broadwood Porters' books held at the Surrey History Centre. The first of these, from 1821, states that it was delivered to His Majesty George the Fourth at Brighton Pavilion. The subsequent two entries, from 1827 and 1829, show that after repairs by Broadwood it was taken to Windsor Castle.
