George Farrington Evans was born in 15 February 1878, the son of Henry Farrington Evans, Esq., C.S.I., Indian Civil Service, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on 31 December 1896. Promoted Lieutenant on 31 December 1899, he served in South Africa during the Boer War, and was present at the Relief of Ladysmith, including the action at Colenso; the operations of 17-24 January 1900 and the action at Spion Kop; the operations of 5-7 February 1900 and the action at Vaal Kranz; the operations on Tugela Height of 14-27 February 1900 and the action at Pieter’s Hill; operations in the Natal, March to June 1900, including the action at Laing’s Nek; and operations in the Transvaal, 30 November 1900 to 31 May 1902. Promoted Captain on 31 December 1905, and Major on 30 October 1914, Evans served during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 August 1914, and was appointed Adjutant, 4th Divisional Engineers, on 25 December 1914, and Commander Royal Engineers, 33rd Division, with the rank of Acting Lieutenant-Colonel, on 31 October 1916. Wounded, for his services during the Great War he was four times Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazettes 19 October 1914, 15 June 1916, 4 January 1917, and 20 May 1918), and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order.
