A Great War ‘Western Front’ posthumous M.M. awarded to Corporal P. Hampton, Durham Light Infantry, who was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916 Military Medal, G.V.R. (21954 Cpl. P. Hampton. 15/Durh: L.I.) polished, edge bruising, nearly very fine £400-£500 Footnote M.M. London Gazette 28 July 1917. Percy Hampton was born in Sunderland, Co. Durham, on 18 June 1890, and attested for the Durham Light Infantry at Stockton on 9 October 1914. He served with the 15th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 9 October 1915, and was killed in action at Fricourt on the first day of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916, on which date the Battalion suffered 388 casualties. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
